Memoirs of a Cake
I was born in a pastry shop in the far far away land of Ghim Moh. I was a hefty and healthy three kilograms at birth, and I had the most delectable and fluffy body. However, while I still busy surveying the world around me, someone came along to rudely manhandle me. I was smeared with a gooey substance and had ridiculous designs drawn on me. To my dismay, it would seem that on my quivering surface, there appeared a yellow (yellow!) boy with strange hair. This boy seemed to be writing gibberish on a classroom blackboard. Hrmmm, I cant read, so bite me! All in all, it was a dismal start to my life as a birthday cake.
As I sat contemplating my fate, two ladies came along to ask for me. My silent screams were ignored as I was whisked away in a white paper prison. After while seemed like an interminable time in darkness, I was suddenly flooded with orange light. I squinted as a few human heads peered at me in my paper receptacle. There were loud exclamations of oohs and ahs. Some commented on the yellow boy emblazoned on my top while others examined the silly trappings foisted on me. I bore their scrutiny with all the dignity I could muster. Lights flashed. I prayed fervently that aliens would come and abduct me.
After the humans seemed satisfied with their examination, I was once again shut in darkness. I could have sworn that the temperature dropped a few degrees thereafter. Have I been sent to the North Pole? I decided to hibernate. However, my snooze was rudely awakened by someone who threw me on some contraption with wheels, and I was wheeled away to some unknown fate. As I waited outside the room that I was brought to previously, I started sweating copiously. It didn’t help when another evil-looking human wielded over me a set of candles with sharpened stakes on them. I trembled as they set fire to the candles, and they took a jolly long time at it too. Hot wax dripped on my tender surface. Someone put out the fire please!!!
Suddenly, I realized that I was moving again, and I was pushed onto a red carpet. Well, after all the indignities I was subjected to, it the very least they could do for me. I peered around in wonder at all the expectant faces and I finally stopped at this young man who openly goggled at me. I know I have the most alluring shape but he didn’t have to look at me in such a way. I blushed, as much as a cake could be allowed to blush. The young man in question gave a small chortle when he finally saw the gibberish words written on me. I was mighty proud to have his approval.
The masses around me sang something in unison…oh, so it was this guy's birthday, was it? He made a little wish over me and then blew out the candles. Somehow, I had forgotten that I had flames licking atop me. I heaved a sigh of relief and all too soon, I was trundled away again. I cast a longing look behind me and I almost imagined that he gave me a wistful glance too. Ah, the path to true love never runs straight. But, I knew that our paths would cross again in the near future.
While I was still lost in my silent thoughts, a knife waved threateningly over me. Noooooo!!!!! What was going on?? I was meticulously divided into many many slices. I shed a beautiful crystal tear for the little yellow boy that used to grin impishly on me. But my story is not at an end yet. One piece of me was delivered to the aforementioned young man! My heart skipped a beat. However, it was a mournful reunion as he seemed to have to attend to the ministrations of many other females clustered around us. That little slice of me glared daggers at the assorted human females but they ignored me of course.
One little consolation for me though. Apparently I received much praise from the assembled throng who felt that I was a cake that had encompassed both looks and taste. I supposed that made my ordeal all worth while!
